For many years homing pigeons were sent by rail for release at a particular station at an agreed time. The pigeons were contained in wicker baskets, which would be seen stacked on the platform ready for loading, or lined up ready for the station staff to release the birds. These cast whitemetal pigeon baskets offer the opportunity to depict this unusual parcel traffic.
