The BR class 73 was an electro-diesel locomotive, able to operate from the Southern region 750-volt third rail electric supply or the internal 650bhp diesel engine. This flexibility made the locomotives ideal for hauling the British leg of the Venice Simplon Orient Express and 73101 was painted into this Pullman livery to match the classic Pullman cars of the train.
Hornby have re-worked this former Lima model, fitting a skew-wound 5-pole motor, greatly improving on the previous Lima mechanism.
