The Southern region of BR had invested in an extensive network of third-rail electified routes. The class 73 locomotive was designed to make the most of this network for goods trains, with an on-board diesel engine to propel the locomotive in sidings and on non-eletrified branch lines. This model is painted in the locomotive green livery carried by the class when orginally built.

Hornby have re-worked this former Lima model, fitting a skew-wound 5-pole motor, greatly improving on the previous Lima mechanism.
