An excellent model of the Hastings gauge 33/2 sub-class, known as Slim Jims. The narrowed bodyshell was necessary for safe working through the confined tunnels on the Hastings line.
Powered by Heljans weighty chassis with centrally placed motor. 33205 carries BR Railfreight triple grey livery with distribution sector diamond logos.

The tunnels on the Tonbridge to Hastings line, built between 1845-1853 were discovered to have inadequate lining. Adding extra courses of brinck lining reduced the bore size, requiring locomotives and coaches operating over this route to have a narrower than normal bodyshell. The class 33/2 locomotives were built for services over this route, but were also used alongside the standard width 33/0. In 1986 the double track through the most restrictive tunnels was replaced by a single track and improved signalling, eliminating the gauge restrictions. Following this the 33/2 locomotives operated the same duties as the 33/0 type. Class 33 locomotives allocated to the freight sector were employed for several years hauling trains for the channel tunnel construction. | |
