Once private companies took over passenger train operation they wanted to distinguish their trains, both from other operators and the previous British Rail image. Many colourful and distinctive liveries have appeared, forging new brands like GNER and linking together bus and rail operations like First and Stagecoach with identifyable paint schemes.
