Heljan OO BR Cl 52 D1037 Western Empress BR Green with Small Yellow Ends (5201)

An enthusiast's favourite and now a finely detailed model by Heljan with a heavy die-cast chassis and centrally mounted motor. The bodyshell features many fine moulded details, right down to the latches and hinges where appropriate on louvre grills and sandbox fillers. Seperate wire handrails are factory fitted, but optional detailing parts are supplied including the front skirt, a dummy coupling hook with screw coupling and etched cabside steps.

The `Western' Type 4 (later Class 52) was introduced in 1961 with a total of 74 being built at Crewe and Swindon. Powered by two Maybach MD655 diesels with Voith L6-30rV hydraulic transmission and a maximum speed of 90mph, use was at first concentrated on top link passenger duties on Western Region. A decision by BR, to standardise on diesel electric power, led to the withdrawal of the class by 1977. Fortunately seven of this interesting and impressive engine survive in preservation.
