Designed by Aspinall for the L&Y the first Pug appeared in 1891, being completed by 1910.Under LMS and later BR ownership many of the class ended up working far from home. Ideal for shunting docks and industrial areas where sharply curved track abounded the light weight Pugs worked as far away as Bristol, South Wales, Cumbria and Yorkshire. The last of these engine remained in service until 1964. Two examples were preserved.
