Ideal for conveying road vehicles, containers and crated loads these wagons were widely known by the 'Medfit' description code. Many thousdands of former private owner wagons were taken over by British Railways in 1948. A large number of these wagons were repaired and repainted into the BR grey goods livery, making them a key feature of the early British Railways period. These rebuilt wagons worked alongside the new steel wagons, being the last wooden bodied coal wagons to be replaced.

The blue-spot fish vans were redeployed after the end of regular fish traffic on BR. A number of these vans were used for express parcels traffic for many years, painted in the plain blue livery applied to BR passenger-rated parcels vehicles. These will certainly be an interesting addition among the bogie vans in a parcels train. | |
