The GWR adopted the use of large capacity steel bodied wagons early in the 20th century. The steel body was much stronger, especially in the heavy use of coal traffic and, after trying 40-ton bogie wagons, the GWR settled on 20 ton capacity???4-wheeled wagons as the optimum solution. Every locomotive shed needed a supply of coal for its' engines, so these wagons travelled all across the network and even the smallest of country branchline sheds would often have one or two nearby.

Don't forget, you can run these wagons empty of loaded, allowing you to exchange???empty wagons at your loco shed with full loads from an incoming train.

Following the adoption of 20-ton wagons for their own use the management of the GWR promoted these wagons for use by the trade. Offering wagon hire and lower haulage rates for coal in 20-ton wagons several colleries and large users took advantage of these rates.

These wagons were used by the Blaenavon colliery company, usually to make bulk deliveries to industrial users or major depots. Often several of the wagons would have travelled together, making the best use of these wagons by ensuring they were quickly emptied and returned.

The GWR were very progressive with their design of cattle wagons, incorporating robust steel frames, oil lubricated axleboxes???and vacuum train brakes in the early 1900s. This allowed cattle trains to be run at higher speeds and the wagons could???be attached to branch passenger trains, cutting journey times. The sound, well-thought-out design of these wagons saw the design adopted with only minor alteration as the???British Railways standard.

Replacing the existing model of the GWR Toad which dates from the earliest production of N gauge by Graham Farish a completely retooled model has been announced. The new vans will be fitted with NEM couplings and tooling options allow for non vacuum and vacuum fitted brake vans to be recreated.

The GWR built these steel bodied grain hopper wagons in the 1930's to handle grain import and export traffic through the ports at Avonmouth and in South Wales.

A superb new model from Graham Farish depicting the common low-sided LMS open wagon. The low sides could be dropped completely on these wagons, allowing a wide variety of loads to be carried including road vehicles, containers and crated loads.
