Pre-1948 Goods Wagons

Wagons from the railways' golden era. Era 3

The Fruit D was the last of the GWR design ventilated fruit vans, this design with three side doors not appearing until after WW2. Many were built in the early BR years and were one of the last GWR types to be found in service, lasting into the early 1980s.
These vans were suitable for running in secondary passenger trains and parcels trains. Later many were adopted by the engineering departments, carrying spare parts for locomotives between depots.

This model painted in the GWR parcels brown livery lettered GW.

Graham Farish N 377-090 7 Plank Wagon End Door NE Grey

All of the major railway companies owned fleets of open wagons, these RCH standard type 7 plank wagons with end doors were normally used for mineral traffic, including coal, as the end doors allowed the wagons to be emptied quickly by up-ending on a tipple.

This model is painted in the LNERs goods grey livery.

The LMS adopted the final design of Midland Railway guards' brake van as the companys' initial standard design. The cabin provided good accomodation for the guard with the handbrake standard in the centre of the van, easily and quickly accessible, and access verandhs at both ends made boarding easy.
While longer than ordinary goods wagons the short brake van did not ride well at the higher speeds which goods trains were attaining in the 1930s and this design was replaced by long wheelbase vans, but with several thousand of these brake vans in service many remained in us into the 1960s.

This model is painted in the early LMS grey livery.

GWR conflat container flat wagon with GWR furniture removals service container.

Once dubbed 'the suitcase of industry' these railway containers were the precursor of the modern container, allowing a contained load to be quickly unloaded or transhipped from rail to road transport. All Peco wagons feature free running wheels in pin point axles. The ELC coupling, whilst compatible with the standard N gauge couplings, keeps a realistic distance between the vehicles and enables the PL-25 electro magnetic decoupler to be used for remote uncoupling.

An excellent model from Dapol of the iron bodied gunpowder van, complete with red cross hazard marking to warning staff that the contents may be dangerous and the van should be shunted carefully. Due to the robust construction some of these vans remained in service safely moving explosives until replaced in the 1980's.

Gunpowder vans were used for the transport of many types of explosives, ranging from early powders to later dynamite and the more stable gelignite. The vans were also used for military traffic, including the delivery of small consignments of ammunition, live and practice, for the use of Territorial Army, reserve units and Army/Navy/Air Force cadet units. A good reason for one single wagon of 'explosives' to arrive at any railway station from time to time.

Model of a 20-ton steel bodied open coal wagon in GWR livery.

The GWR promoted the use of these high capacity and durable 20-ton wagons in the 1930s, having used them for many years to haul locomotive coal. The company built a fleet of these wagons, hiring them to coal traders to encourage them to replace their old 10 and 12 ton capacity wooden wagons.
This model is ideal for both commercial deliveries and company (locomotive) coal traffic.

A detailed model of the Southern Railways' bogie goods brake vans. These vans were introduced to ensure the guard had a smooth-riding vehicle suitable for travel at the higher speeds of express goods and parcels trains. The commodious accomodations and enclosed verandahs were also appreciated by the engineers, who made good use of these vans as riding, messing and equipment/tool carriers until the 1990s.
Several are now preserved and used to offer brake van rides during heritage railway gala days.

This model is painted in the Southern Railways goods brown livery, which has also been applied to a number of preserved vans.

Never before available in N scale, this Graham Farish model depicts the South Eastern and Chatham Railway’s (SE&CR) 25 Ton Goods Brake which became known as the ‘Dance Halls’ owing to the spacious cabin provided for the Guard. Designed and built by the SE&CR, the Southern Railway (SR) built further examples after Grouping before designing their own version – the 25 Ton ‘Pill Box’ Brake Van (models of which are also produced by Graham Farish) – which afforded a Guard much less covered accommodation. Whilst the final example was built during the 1920s, the Dance Halls were long lived with some surviving through to the late-twentieth century having been granted a second life in departmental use.

LNER long wheelbase goods train brake van painted in bauxite brown livery.
The LNER introduced this design of goods train guard brake van in the late 1930s, the longer chassis wheelbase giving a much smoother ride than the previous shorter designs. The cabin length remained the same, being perfectly adequate for its' single passenger and for stowing the equipment required to be carried with the train. This design was adopted for the standard British Railways goods train brake vans built in the 1950s.

Railway companies all had a stock of their own vehicles for carrying goods and merchandise around their network, and also onto other companies' routes as and when required. These were integrated into British Railways at Nationalisation; some of them to be once more re liveried under sectorisation as the network was prepared to be returned to private ownership. All Peco wagons feature free running wheels in pin point axles. The ELC coupling, whilst compatible with the standard N gauge couplings, keeps a realistic distance between the vehicles and enables the PL-25 electro magnetic decoupler to be used for remote uncoupling.

A nice model of the last design of goods train guards brake van built by the Midland Railway just before the grouping in 1922/3. This style of short length brake van was adopted as standard by the LMS, though the LMS built vans had lookout duckets added to the sides.

All Peco wagons feature free running wheels in pin point axles. The ELC coupling, whilst compatible with the standard N gauge couplings, keeps a realistic distance between the vehicles and enables the PL-25 electro magnetic decoupler to be used for remote uncoupling.

Many of these vans were still to be found in service in the early BR era, though steadily being replaced by the longer wheelbase BR brake vans.
