more | Hornby OO Transrail Sealion YGB Ballast Hopper Wagon Transrail (R6330A) The 40-ton Sealion ballast hoppers were built in the 1970's and fitted with the quick acting AFI vacuum brake system. Based on an earlier Southern Railway design these wagons were used widely across the BR network, conveying fresh ballast, which could be discharged directly onto newly laid track through the central hopper and side chutes. Bachmann have almost completed the range of wagons used by BR on the air braked Speedlink network with this OCA model. This third design of open wagon was fitted with a robust steel sided body, suitable for carrying steel sheets. The mixed fleet of wood body OBA and steel body OCA wagons ensured that a wagon with the most suitable type of body construction could be used.
This model carries the engineering departments grey and yellow or dutch livery style.

Bachmann's model captures these distictive vehicles well, including the cut-out panels in the centre of the sides intended to prevent overloading with ballast, while retaining the high sides useful for many lighter track materials.

more | Bachmann OO BR YGH Sealion 40-ton Bogie Ballast Hopper Olive Green (38-130)
The 40-ton capacity bogie ballast hoppers were first used by the Southern Railway. Adopted by Britiah Rail as a standard design these wagons carry fresh ballast from quarries to maintain the British Railway network.
The olive green livery was standard for engineering vehicles from the 1960's to the early 1980's, engineers wagons often missing out on regular repainting! The YGH code was added during the 1970's.

An excellent new model of the BR engineers shark ballast plough brake van. These brake vans are used with ballast hopper wagons, the ballast plough being lowered to spread fresh ballast across the track formation.
