The 40-ton Sealion ballast hoppers were built in the 1970's and fitted with the quick acting AFI vacuum brake system. Based on an earlier Southern Railway design these wagons were used widely across the BR network, conveying fresh ballast, which could be discharged directly onto newly laid track through the central hopper and side chutes.
Transrail was formed as a freight train operating company while BR was preparing for privatisation. Several Sealion wagons were painted in this livery before the company was purchased by and merged into EWS.
