The Stanier designed LMS 'Black 5' type mixed traffic 4-6-0's were among the very last locomotives in service with British railways in 1968. These versatile locomotives were capable of hauling all but the heaviest passenger and goods trains with ease. No. 44896 represents the class in the early British railways period wearing the lined black livery with early style emblem.
