| > N Locomotives > Multiple Units | Railcars and unit trains are now the principal types of trains in use on Britains Railways. The first successful diesel trains were the GWRs' streamlined railcars. British Rail built Diesel Multiple Units (DMUs) to take over from steam locomotives on branchline and suburban passenger trains in the 1950s and 60s. Today the Intercity 125 High Speed Train (HST) and Voyager trains form the backbone of the British passenger rail network.

2-car BR class 158 'Super Sprinter' diesel multiple unit train in Wessex Trains Alphalinel livery. Introduced during the 1990's to replace locomotives and Mk1 coaches with modern air-conditioned trains on medium and long distance cross-country services where traffic flows do not require HST trains. Wessex Trains operate in the South West of England. Alphaline was the brand name for the principal routes operated including Cardiff-Portsmouth and Gloucester-Penzance.
