Rivarossi HO German Leopold Railway Gun (HR6026)
An interesting OO/HO gauge model of the German Leopold rail-carriage mounted gun. The gun barrel can be elevated, allowing the gun to be set level for travelling or posed in a firing position. The rail bogies are fitted with wheels in four three-axle units, allowing the model to run freely on curves.

Navel guns mounted on rail mobile gun carriages were used by both German and British forces during WW1, these large guns could provide long-range bombardment. The 280mm Leopold gun was built by the Germans in WW2, with a range of 54,680 yards (31 miles!) but despite multi-axle railway carriage mounting the lack of mobility made these guns vulnerable to the much improved attack aircraft of the second war. Concealing these guns from air reconnaissance and attack virtually negated their tactical effectiveness. The Leopold contributed to the problems faced by Allied forces landing at Anzio, Italy and, being concealed in tunnels was secured from several attempts to destroy it. The gun was finally captured after having been isolated by the destruction of railways leading to it’s concealment tunnel and is now displayed at the US Army’s Aberdeen artillery proving grounds, Maryland USA. European type loop couplings are fitted to this model. The hook from a British tension lock coupling will attach to this loop.
