These hoppers were used to store cement delivered by rail for onward distribution by road delivery vehicles. The retort house was a key building in the manufacture of town gas from coal. The principal source of gas in the UK until North Sea gas became available every town has it's own gasworks.
This building has many other uses as well, it is ideal for use as a factory??boiler house, or small electric power plant. Simply add a siding for a couple of wagons and a coal heap alongside to create a very useful destination for your goods trains.

This is a small square industrial type building, described as a fan house, but it can have dozens of other applications. The design is typical of the???utilitarian buildings used to house power distribution control equipments, used with the Skaledale transformer it would complete a grid power distribution installation. Similar buildings were also used to house pumps for water supply and control equipments for???other utilities, for both domestic distribution and for major manufacturing plants.. | |
