Operated by Peake, Oliver & Peake Ltd. based at the London coal exchange this wagon is marked for coke traffic only and would have been used to transport coke from ovens in many coal fields to terminals in the London area.
Coke is a processed form of coal from which many impurities have been driven off. The resulting coke burns much more intensely than normal coal and is required for some industrial processes (eg. metal smelting furnaces) and burns more cleanly, making it a favoured fuel for some cooking stoves. | |

This wagon from Northampton would have been seen travelling around the coal fields of the UK, collecting coal for the power company's boilers.

20-ton capacity coal wagons were introduced in the 1930's, the railway companies offering a better rate per ton for coal haulage in these larger wagons. To assist with unloading these high-capacity wagons two doors were fitted in each side, plus end and often four bottom hatch doors.
This model carries the brick red livery of a wagon operated by Stevens of Oxford. Although No.1001 suggests a large fleet this may actually be the first 20-ton wagon operated by the company, many operators numbering these wagons in a new, separate series. This helped identify the large wagons and prevent them being sent to pits where high-sided wagons would not fit under the loading screens! | |

Stephenson Clarke were one of the largest coal factoring companies in the UK, supplying many types of coal sourced from from British collieries to any destination required. The large volumes of coal being moved made the higher capacity 20-ton steel wagons especially attractive to the company, particularly when combined with the reduced rates charged by the railway companies and lease-hire scheme offered by the GWR who were actively promoting the use of these 20-ton wagons.
Stephenson Clarke had adopted this simplfied lettering scheme, with just the letters S C appearing on the side of the wagons. This helped keep costs down in the hard economic times of the 1930s. | |
