A large capacity hopper wagon in service with the Northampton Electric Light company. Before the creation of the national power grid many towns and cities had their own electric power generation company, sometimes municipally owned. The power plant of a major town would consume large quantities of coal and these large capacity wagons helped reduce haulage costs. This wagon from Northampton would have been seen travelling around the coal fields of the UK, collecting coal for the power company's boilers.
