Renwick & Wilton were very well known coal factors and merchants in the Torquay area, having depots along the English Riviera. The company operated a large fleet of wagons, serving domestic customers and larger consumers like the local town gas works.

Wagon 124 was painted in a plain black and white livery. It carries Gloucester RCW Co. plates and may well have been drawn from that company's large pool of lease wagons.

Renwick & Wilton as a company diversified inter several areas of the transport business, remaining based in the west country. So far as we are aware the last part of the business to survive under the Renwick name was the travel agency business, which was finally taken over by a national chain in the 1980s.

The Gloucester Railway Carriage and Wagon Company was a prolific builder or railway vehicles of all kinds. The company owned a large pool of wagons which could be hired on short or long term lease and also owned Wagon Repairs Ltd. The lease wagons were often painted at local depots to ensure rapid delivery of the new wagon. No customer would accept a wagon still painted in his competitors' livery, simple black and white liveries are common. On long leases new wagons would often be supplied later painted in the operators full livery.
