These bulk grain wagons were among the first of the modern era of British railway wagons, replacing steam era designs. A long wheelbase chassis and automatic train brake system allowed an increase in train speed, while the 35-ton capacity maximised the load within existing axle load limits for unrestricted use.

Painted in plain bauxite brown these wagons were actually owned by wagon leasing company BRT.

British Railways inherited thousands of coal wagons from the ministry of transport, these having been requisitioned during WW2 for pool use. Many of these elderly wooden wagons were not fit for further service. Those wagons� still in good condition were overhauled and repainted in goods grey, surviving through the 1950s until replaced by new-built wagons.

This model is a BR-owned wagon in general pool service lettered Bulk Cement. A traders' poster advertising Corwn Cement has been applied to the end supports indicating the wagons' latest load.

Chemicals giant ICI operated a wide variety of wagons, including this BR Presflo design. Painted in the companys' sea green colours these wagons were used for powder type materials including salt products.

A new version of the 6-wheel milk tank wagon in one of the final liveries carried in service. Several overhauled wagons were painted with blue tanks lettered for the�milk marketing board. This one carried the word milk along with the boards' title.

The Bachmann BR (ex-GWR) brake van is an excellent and well detailed model of these distinctive vehicles. This version carries the BR unfitted light grey paint scheme with black patches for lettering. Lettering includes details of the vans use, in this case RU (for Restricted Use) from Stourbridge.

A good model of the GWR design 30-ton bogie bolster wagon in the BR goods grey livery. These wagons were used for the carriage of all long loads, including timber and steel section.

While Tunnel Cement purchased some wagons themselves this wagon carries a BR number, indicating a railway-owned wagon, but evidently on lease as the wagon also carries Tunnels' number T59.

A good model of these steel bodied vans which were specially built and fitted with secure doors for the transport of explosives.

Originally this was principally gunpowder and frequently used to transport explosives for mines and quarries, this name was retained for use on these vans long after other exploseives were developed. During peacetime the cargoes included all kinds of explosives and potentially explosive material, plus ammunition deliveries for reserve and cadet units across Britain.

This model has the white line printed at the wrong end, a not uncommon mistake made by piece work painters among the many thousands of 16-ton minerals built.

Banana vans were commonly seen operating in block trains from the Bristol Channel ports in the 1950's. These vans were specially constructed, fitted with steam heating and extra insulation to maintain temperature and rippen bananas in transit.

Dapols' model represents the BR built vans, with doors designed to maintain a good seal. This wagon carries a poster from Geest, one of the principal UK banana importers.

The BR design banana van was an insulated vehicle with a special sealing door designed to ensure that bananas were transported at a constant temperature. This wagon is painted in the BR bauxite scheme and carries a poster advertising well-known banana importers Fyffes.

Another weathered version of the BR standard 16-ton mineral wagon. Dapols first weateherd 16-tonner was very effectively modelled, representing one of these robust wagons after many miles of service.

Around a quarter of a million 16-ton mineral wagons were built in the 1950's, many lasting into the late 1970's. The miners strike of the mid-1980's allowed the last examples to be withdrawn from revenue service.

Bogie well wagons were used for loads which would be too tall to fit inside the loading gauge (the maximum size of the train which will pass through bridges etc.). The depressed central well section allowed the load to be carried below the floor level of standard wagons.

This model is a GWR designed 45-ton capacity wagon as running during the early British Railways period, painted in the light grey goods wagon livery. Several suitable loads are available, including large boilers and electricity power transformers.

An excellent model of an ex-private owner 8-plank open coal wagon in BR service. Painted in the standard goods grey livery this wagon carries a P series number and V marking indicating that doors are fitted into the floor for emptying into undertrack staithes or hoppers.

Following the pooling of coal wagons during WW2 many thousands of privately owned wagons were passed to British Railways at nationalisation. These wagons were painted in the standard grey livery and given numbers prefixed with the letter P.

Dapol have produced a very nice model of the BR design banana van. These wagons were similar to ordinary box and fruit vans, but adapted with insulation and in some cases heating specially for the transport of imported bananas.

These vans ran in trains of varied length, according to the destination demands and could also be seen running singly to deliver smaller loads. When not needed for banana traffic the vans would sometimes be used for other 'clean' goods.

The return of the LNER style wooden 20-ton 9-plank open wagon. These long wheelbase wagons had two drop doors fitted each side, plus bottom hatch doors.

Presflo wagons were used for almost any powder product, this example is painted in the BR goods grey livery and lettered for loading with slate powder, often used as a filler or thickner for paint.

GWR orders for the Fruit D express fruit van were still being delivered into the 1950s. These useful vans were widely used for express parcels the growing small consignments business. Being a passenger rated van able to run in passenger trains the BR maroon livery was applied, seen here on number W2919
