Dapol have produced a very nice model of the BR design banana van. These wagons were similar to ordinary box and fruit vans, but adapted with insulation and in some cases heating specially for the transport of imported bananas.
These vans ran in trains of varied length, according to the destination demands and could also be seen running singly to deliver smaller loads. When not needed for banana traffic the vans would sometimes be used for other 'clean' goods. | |

Normally a trains of these wagons would operate from colliery to consumer as a block train, but a wagon would occasionally escape into the house coal service. This Dapol wagon has metal wheels to provide smooth running characteristics. | |

The BR built blue-spot express fish vans were transferred to other duties after fish traffic ceased. Many were transferred to engineering departments for use as stores vans, transferring parts between repair works and locomotive depots.
This van is lettered for the Barrow Hill shed near Chesterfield. This depot is the oldest operational roundhouse shed, providing a home for many mainline certified and preserved steam, diesel and electric locomotives. | |

Many thousands of these wagons were built in the 1950's, many lasting into the late 1970's. The miners strike of the mid-1980's allowed the last examples to be withdrawn from revenue service. | |
