Dapol have produced a very nice model of the BR design banana van. These wagons were similar to ordinary box and fruit vans, but adapted with insulation and in some cases heating specially for the transport of imported bananas.

These vans ran in trains of varied length, according to the destination demands and could also be seen running singly to deliver smaller loads. When not needed for banana traffic the vans would sometimes be used for other 'clean' goods.

An excellent model of the rivetted construction BR 21-ton steel bodied open mineral wagon. The rivet patterns around the sides and structral components are well represented and lettering is cleanly printed. A load with three coal heaps from the loading plant is fitted.

These wagons were used to move coal for large consumers, such as power stations and steel mills. Normally a trains of these wagons would operate from colliery to consumer as a block train, but a wagon would occasionally escape into the house coal service. This Dapol wagon has metal wheels to provide smooth running characteristics.

The 6-wheel milk tank wagons lost the brightly painted liveries during the post war austerity period and nationalisation of the railways. The tanks were painted in a plain silver scheme with the owners name displayed on a plate attached to the side.

Dapols model recreates this well, providing a milk tank suitable for running with BR steam and diesel traction up to the mid-1970s.

A good model of these steel bodied vans which were specially built and fitted with secure doors for the transport of explosives.

Originally this was principally gunpowder and frequently used to transport explosives for mines and quarries, this name was retained for use on these vans long after other exploseives were developed. During peacetime the cargoes included all kinds of explosives and potentially explosive material, plus ammunition deliveries for reserve and cadet units across Britain.

Banana vans were commonly seen operating in block trains from the Bristol Channel ports in the 1950's. These vans were specially constructed, fitted with steam heating and extra insulation to maintain temperature and rippen bananas in transit.

Dapols' model represents the BR built vans, with doors designed to maintain a good seal. This wagon carries a poster from Geest, one of the principal UK banana importers.

The presflo wagon was designed in the 1950s for the conveyance of bulk powder materials, which can be loaded and unloaded by pumping. Ideally suited to the transport of cement many of these railway-owned wagons painted in the fitted wagon bauxite scheme were lettered for bulk cement. These were the general service wagons which often supplemented the wagons dedicated to specific companys' traffic which carried the large traders adverts on the sides. 

The BR design banana van was an insulated vehicle with a special sealing door designed to ensure that bananas were transported at a constant temperature. This wagon is painted in the BR bauxite scheme and carries a poster advertising well-known banana importers Fyffes.

Chemicals giant ICI operated a wide variety of wagons, including this BR Presflo design. Painted in the companys' sea green colours these wagons were used for powder type materials including salt products.

The BR engineers' Grampus is being produced for the first time as a ready-to-run model. The plain black livery was commonly applied by the engineering departments, even when the official livery colour was different and was still seen well into the 1980s.

Engineering wagons have long been neglected, the Grampus was one of the BR engineers principal open wagons. Developed from the last GWR ballast wagon design everything that needed to be moved to a remote worksite could be loaded into Grampus wagons. The long length wagons easily accomodated crossing timbers (extra-long sleepers), while full drop sides allowed ballast and spoil to be unloaded easily, while the removable ends allowed longer loads to be accomodated.

Presflo wagons were used for almost any powder product, this example is painted in the BR goods grey livery and lettered for loading with slate powder, often used as a filler or thickner for paint.

A welcome re-introduction of the former Lima 6-wheel milk tank wagon model from Hornby. The chassis moulding has been upgraded to properly model the GWR design and incorporate NEM coupler pockets to allow alternative couplers to be fitted.

This model carries a plain silver tank with United Dairies markings on a black background, typical of the marking used after nationalisation.

12-ton ex-GWR 'Mogo' motor car van BR bauxite goods wagon livery.

The BR built blue-spot express fish vans were transferred to other duties after fish traffic ceased. Many were transferred to engineering departments for use as stores vans, transferring parts between repair works and locomotive depots.

This van is lettered for the Barrow Hill shed near Chesterfield. This depot is the oldest operational roundhouse shed, providing a home for many mainline certified and preserved steam, diesel and electric locomotives.

The Bachmann BR (ex-GWR) brake van is an excellent and well detailed model of these distinctive vehicles. This version carries the BR unfitted light grey paint scheme with black patches for lettering. Lettering includes detailes of the vans use, in this case RU (for Restricted Use) from Bristol West Depot.
