A new model of the BR standard design van with steel ends and plywood side sheeting. Several thousand of these box vans were built alongside the planked version of the same basic design.
Painted in the BR bauxite colour for vacuum brake fitted goods wagons, many of these wagons carried this livery until withdrawn in the 1970s and it is commonly seen today on preserved examples.
The BR box van was built as a standard design from the 1950s until modern long-wheelbase air-braked vans enetered service in the early 1970s. Once properly prepared and painted at the workshops plywood van bodies hava a long life and low maintenance demand. These were among the last of the traditional British goods wagons in regular use and are popular with preservation groups and heritage railways for use as storage vans. | |
