| > OO Locomotives > BR Standards | The railways nationalisation act placed the British rail network under the control the British Railways Board on the 1st of January 1948. The board appointed Robert Riddles as its’ chief engineer, charging him with the design of standard locomotives, coaches and wagons, for use across the entire BR network. A design philosophy was evolved, combining standardisation of parts and fittings with accessibility and ease of maintenance.
999 BR Standard locomotives were built, from 1951, in 12 types, ranging from 2MT 2-6-0 and 2-6-2 tank classes for local use to the 9F heavy goods 2-10-0 and Britannia class express passenger 4-6-2. Initially region loyal enginemen disliked the standard types, however reliability and the comfort offered by enclosed cabs made many converts and standard locomotives served successfully on all regions until displaced by diesel power.

New Re-Tooled Model for 2008
The popular BR class 4MT 4-6-0 is scheduled for an overhaul! One of the first of the current generation highly detailed OO model locomtives, this model will be produced using completely new tooling, bringing the model into line with the standards set by Bachmanns' newest models. The chassis has been updated to current specifications, including DCC options while the bodyshell will feature dozens of separately fitted parts.
75027 will be equiped with a double chimney and BR2 type tender and painted in the BR lined green passenger livery. This model represents the class as working on and from the Southern region, often successfully replacing older and nominally more powerful locomotives. British Railways built 80 class 4MT 4-6-0 locomotives between May 1951 and June 1957. The first was withdrawn in December 1964 and the last in August 1968 with the end of steam traction on the national standard gauge network. | |
