The LMS Fairburn-designed 2-6-4 tank engines were powerful and free running locomotives, intended for heavy suburban trains on the LMS routes, including the Southend line. Following nationalisation 42096 was sent to the Southern Regions, where the Fairburns were welcomed by engine crews, their power and extra water capacity allowing longer runs to be made between water stops with heavy commuter trains.
