British Rail ceased regular steam locomotive operation ceased in August 1968, with a special train on August 11th hauled by Stanier Black 5 locomotives 44781 and 44871.

Hornby are producing a very special limited edition of these two locomotives, with just 1004 models of each. The Hornby Black 5 is a superb highly detailed model of the famous Stanier mixed traffic 4-6-0, 44781 being equiped with a raised rivetted tender.

2008 marks the 40th Anniversary of the end of steam hauled passenger services on British Railways. A specially prepared train was rostered on that fateful Sunday morning of the 11th August 1968 which ran from Liverpool to Carlisle and then back to Liverpool and was known as the “Fifteen Guinea Special”. Several locomotives were to be used during the journey with two coupled up to run double headed between Carlisle and Manchester on the return journey. These two locomotives - 44781 and 44871 - are the subject of two special limited edition models, each individually packed in a commemorative box with an accompanying numbered certificate. Each locomotive has been produced as a limited edition of 1004.
