Single driver locomotives were mostly obsolete by the end of the 19th century, however some of the later designs with superheated boilers were still in service after the grouping in 1923.

This locomotive replicates the last of the singles on the LMS, painted in the lined black livery applied to secondary passenger locomotives. The fast running singles could often be seen in use as pilot engines, leading a double-headed train and on many lightly-loaded cross-country passenger trains.
