| > OO Locomotives > GWR | In 1923, the railways in the UK were rationalised into four big companies - the grouping. The GWR remained almost unchanged and locomotive development unaffected. Dean at the beginning of the 20th century, then Churchward, Collett and Hawksworth were Chief Mechanical Engineers who developed the GWR loco with its unique style. On nationalisation in 1947 GWR loco's were the only ones to retain their pre-nationalisation numbers.
Great Western Railway locomotives were generally very successful and many remained in service almost untouched through the years from nationalisation in 1947 until the end of steam traction. A Castle 4-6-0 sending up a column of smoke as it slipped and struggled to pull a heavy South Wales express away from Swindon was quite a sight.

The GWR 68xx 4-6-0 Grange joins Hornby's range of top quality steam locomotive models. A highly detailed model with many separately fitted parts including handrails, pipes and control rods. The cab features crisply printed gauge dials plus red painted regulator and reverser handles. The Collett type 3,500 gal. tender has a removable coal load and details including lifting rings. Powered by a smooth running 5-pole skew wound motor it runs as good as it looks. No.6862 Derwent Grange with 3,500 gal. Collett style tender in unlined BR Black with early type BR logo representing the class in the early 1950's. DCC socket fitted inside boiler. Introduced in 1936, the Grange was a Collett design as a variation of the Hall, with smaller wheels at 5' 8" - reducing speed but increasing tractive effort to give better acceleration or ability to handle heavy loads. In 1955 this loco was shedded at 81F - Oxford Fairford.
