A capacitor discharge unit is used to help ensure that point motors receive a good voltage when the control switch is thrown. This helps ensure that point motors throw properly in answer to the control switch.
Due to exposed terminals and the possibility of receiving an electric shock from the charged capacitor the CDU should be fitted inside an enclosure while in use.
