BR developed new wagons in the 1970s, focusing on the efficient haulage of bulk loads, using higher capacity wagons to reduce the empty vehicle weight. Combined with new designs of frames and quick acting air brakes the new and longer 4-wheel and 100-ton bogie wagons can travel safely at higher train speeds, reducing transit time. An increase in wagon leasing by customers and traffic from Europe has also seen the reappearance of bright advertising liveries on many types of wagons.
